The percussion Instrument Daf is a frame drum, which is mainly played in Persia (Iran and parts of Turkey, Afghanistan, Iraq, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan). It is lightweight, so that it can be played in the hand. The Muslim Sufis in the Persian area use it in rituals and it is an important ceremonial drum. Metal rings are fixed on the frame, which is about 5cm deep, giving the instrument a very distinctive sound. The Daf is covered with goat skin and has a diameter of 48 cm or 53 cm. Traditionally it is made from one piece of curved wood.
The new Daf that I have developed consists of several pieces of softwood, which I have glued and then hand-turned on the lathe. Thus the drum has become very lightweight (approx. 800 gr). My Daf can be tuned by a screw system.
